Space & setting.

Once a 1950s circus showman’s wagon, this quirky escape still brims with character. Its interiors have been thoughtfully revamped by first Bailey’s Home then its present-day owners, and whilst the atmosphere and original craftmanship still remain, they’ve been blended with modern day comfort and style (meaning you don’t have to cram into an old tin bath by the stove, or indeed tame lions for your supper).

Best of all, you’re joyously secluded from the real world, tucked away in the arboretum of a grand Victorian house in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Views soar over hay meadows out to the Black Mountains and stunning walks are all around. Spring and summer promise river swims, picnics and long evenings by the firepit; winter stays are all about frosty strolls then cosying up indoors, with red wine and Scrabble. Though you’ll pop out to foodie pubs and Hay-on-Wye’s indys, the real treat is returning here for absolute peace.

Getting here: you’ll need to drive

“The wagon is in the arboretum of our Grade I-listed Victorian house, which has been our family home since it was built in 1850. We have 2 self-catering properties in the grounds already but wanted to add something smaller, and different – and when we saw the wagon for sale, she seemed a natural fit. She was originally a showman’s van before Bailey’s Home, a homeware store near Ross-on-Wye, renovated her for use as an office. We added a stove and a bed, and built an outdoor kitchen using old oak beams from the estate. We designed our own fabrics for the curtains and cushions inside the wagon, based on our Victorian tile and stained-glass window patterns, to create a link with the heritage of the main house. Guests staying in the wagon are welcome to explore our 10 acres of gardens and grounds, and to book a house tour or a guided walk around the farmland by my husband, Hugh.” Owner, Sally

  • "The most kind and hospitable host, and the most beautiful stay. We had a wonderful weekend despite Storm Bert making an appearance. We hope to return!"

  • "We absolutely loved everything about this stay. Such a relaxing weekend away where we managed to properly slow down and enjoy being away from things in nature. The area is beautiful with lots of things to see and the wagon is just lovely, especially in autumn. Having a cup of tea looking out over the hills, cosying up in front of the wood burner inside, reading a book on the corner bench, having a shower while listening to the birds in the trees. The estate is stunning and we especially appreciated the tasty local apple juice we found in the fridge. Truly such a unique stay and we cannot wait to come back!"

  • "The place is well thought through. We loved the peace and connection with nature. The accommodation is cozy and very clean. We had all we needed to cook, to burn the fire in the wagon and outside. Hot shower outside is amazing. The area is gorgeous with a lake close by, shops and other activities. Surrounding villages are worth to stop by. Initially we rented this wagon because of its close location to the Brecon National Park. The only one thing was missing for us is some pallettes outside the wagon. We really wanted to lay down outside and chill. But overall, we recommend this lovely place and organised hosts."

  • "Our stay in Mynydd Wagon was so beautiful, it really is the perfect place to recharge. The setting is so tranquil, surrounded by rolling hills. The wagon instantly feels homely and the outdoor kitchen is wonderful. Loved the locally printed textiles, detailed decor touches and the wood burner was such a delight!"

  • "Had a fantastic couple of nights in Mynydd Wagon, exploring the surrounding grounds and black mountains. The wagon itself is really cosy and there were some lovely touches of fresh eggs and home made elderflower cordial on arrival. The outdoor kitchen is really well equipped and has everything you need. Really beautiful and quiet setting and I'll definitely be back to explore more of the Brecon Beacons at some point."

  • "Spent an idyllic weekend in the wagon while visiting the Hay festival. Perfect peace from the bustle of the festival. Really comfy and cosy and a fab view from the shower! The kitchen was fun, and nice to end the days around the fire pit... will be back.“

  • "Our stay at Mynydd Wagon, Wales really was everything we wanted from our weekend away and exceeded our expectations. Peaceful, private and immersed in nature, with the most glorious views to be enjoyed from every window and nook of the wagon. We loved the emphasis on quality and comfort - the bed was so luxurious and comfy, which made for the best night’s sleep! And the stylish way in which the interior and exterior spaces have been curated satiated my aesthete’s eye and heart. Such a fabulous getaway we almost want to keep it to ourselves, but it’s too good not to share!”.

Sustainability.

A compost loo and solar lighting around the wagon. Wood for the firepit and the stove is harvested from the estate. The land on the estate is sustainably farmed and the owners are increasing biodiversity with their hay meadows and management of ancient trees and hedgerows.

  • Walk through the hay meadows to St Gastyn’s, an ancient church on the shores of Llangorse lake, then along the lake to a bird hide (45 mins). Take binoculars and enjoy the peace – the lake is a nature reserve and SSSI, with plenty of birdlife. If you want to make a day of it, go for lunch or supper at The Castle Inn in Llangorse.
  • Take a picnic up the Allt (the hill behind the wagon) for sunset – the views of the Brecon Beacons from its summit are glorious.
  • Go wild swimming in the River Usk; the owners can recommend secluded spots a short drive away.
  • The New Inn in Bwlch is a 5-minute drive away; a small cosy pub with a fire and a good selection of ales and homecooked food. Or for a knockout meal, we love the Felin Fach Griffin; a nearby gastropub with local beers and an organic kitchen garden.
  • Climb Pen y Fan, the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons (and swim in Llyn Cwm Llwch, the pond under the summit, on the way down).
  • Day trip to Hay-on-Wye. We’d recommend its newly renovated castle, Shepherds Parlour for an ice cream, the Old Electric Shop for vintage finds, and all the second-hand bookshops. Thursday is market day, with wonderful local produce.
  • Bring bikes or hire them at Bikes and Hikes in Talybont and take a leisurely cycle along the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal.
  • If the weather doesn’t play ball, drive to Brecon (15 mins) to visit its impressive Y Gaer museum and the Found art gallery. Brecon Cathedral is also worth a visit, as is the Hours Bookshop and Café alongside it.
  • Ask the owners for a tour of their historical house, with its archways, turrets, gargoyles, elaborately carved stone fireplaces and secret passageway in the library!

FAQs.

In summer you can walk around Llangorse lake to the Red Lion pub (lovely walk, about 40 minutes); in winter the path tends to be flooded.

It’s not recommended because of the reeds and the pike! You can hire rowing boats and pedalos however.

Small well-behaved dogs can stay by special request and provided they sleep in their own bed; the wagon is not really big enough for large dogs.

Yes, there are two, both on the river Usk, about 15 minutes’ drive from the wagon. Directions are in the notes that you’ll be sent after booking.

Check-in is 4pm but in the winter you’re welcome to arrive earlier.

Yes, the owners can recommend 3 or 4 companies after you’ve booked a stay.
