Space & setting.

With a unique talent for pulling together different trends, the owner of this revamped bungalow on the Causeway Coast has injected superb style into the space. She balances her eye for old-but-gold with a fine-tuned sense of style, playfully pairing pieces of driftwood with an industrial side table; Moroccan pendant lamps with rattan-framed antique art; glossy teal tiles with dried pampas grass. Yet as packed as it is with quirky treasures, the huge windows that look out across wildflower meadows to the sea give a calming spaciousness.

Set on private farmland 2 miles from the otherworldly Giant’s Causeway, you’ll be perfectly placed to walk (or run wild) along Northern Ireland’s rugged coastline. There’s great surf at Whiterocks and kids will love swimming, sandcastling and rock-pooling on Portballintrae Beach, a sheltered crescent-shaped stretch of sand just a 10-minute drive away. Come home salty and sandy to home-baked cakes from Karen’s Farmhouse Kitchen, best enjoyed with a pot of tea and board games by the fire.

Getting here: best to drive

“As soon as we saw the house we offered on it and got to ‘Sale agreed’, but then had to wait 2 and a half years before the sale was finalised! We refused to walk away as we knew the view and the setting were so special.” Owner, Olive

Surrounds.

  • Dunlace Castle
    Dunlace Castle
  • White Rocks
    White Rocks
  • Barn Door Coffee in nearby Coleraine does a banging brunch using locally sourced ingredients like Aghadowey eggs.
  • The Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills Railway is the best way to see this scenic limestone shoreline; kids will love the novelty factor.
  • Beneath the limestone cliffs of the North Coast is surf hotspot Whiterocks Beach – don’t forget your wetsuit, wax and board (or hire it all when you get here).
  • Take the kids to Rose Park Farm, to feed goats, pet kittens and paddle in Northern Ireland’s only inland ‘beach’
  • Game of Thrones fans can visit Castle Greyjoy! Just head to historic Bushmills, where the crumbling basalt outcrop of Dunluce Castle was its setting. The cafe does superb cheese toasties from Maegden with homemade pickles.
  • For a proper seafood feast, it doesn’t get fresher than family-run Harry’s Shack, which serves up Mulroy Bay mussels and Greencastle hake right on the sand of Portstewart beach.
