Space & setting.

Picture a riot of colour and patterns that brilliantly collide into dreamy interiors. Add superb local art and handmade ceramics, delicious farm-to-table food, and sweeping views over the Coly Valley and you have the basis of Glebe Cabin: a truly special place to stay in East Devon. Inspired by Italian agrotourismos, with their home-grown seasonal food and slow pace of life, owners Olive and Hugo transformed his childhood home — a Georgian vicarage — into a boho-chic modern retreat for those who need rejuving. She has decorated every corner with exuberance and flair; he heads up the award-winning artisan restaurant, and the whole place has a gentle, sociable feel.

Glebe Cabin is a romantic hideaway in the gardens of Glebe House, spun from local cedar with pink panelling, Pooky lampshades, hand-painted murals and the comfiest bed. We stayed in a rainstorm and adored listening to it drumming down on the roof while we cosied up by the woodburner. The next day, bright sunshine meant we could explore Glebe’s 15 acres — including a vegetable and cuttings garden, an on-site bakery and temperature-controlled ageing room for curing meats. With the Jurassic Coast 4 miles away, and a swimming pool and tennis court on-site, there’s everything you could possibly need for a restorative escape, and whilst a cute kitchen means you can self-cater if you want, superb food is a mere 100m away… and breakfast is included in your stay.

Getting here: drive, or train to Honiton then taxi (10 mins)

Hugo grew up here, and throughout his childhood there was a constant hum of guests flowing through the doors, as his parents, Emma and Chuck, ran it as a generous, homely and foodie B&B. As years went on it became clear that this had become a sanctuary and special place, not only for the family, but to anyone who passed through the doors.

Having met and married Olive, the couple spent some time in Italy and became inspired by agrotourismos; working farms with accommodation and small restaurants. After honing his craft as a chef in top London restaurants, in 2020 Hugo and the family moved from London to build an English agrotourismo, with a celebration of food, art and craft.

My Kip favourites

They love
Climbing the hill behind the house to watch the sun set.

We loved
Soaking in the outdoor bath and admiring the first signs of spring: daffodils and yellow primroses poking their heads up, and joyful birdsong.

You may not love
You’re not totally secluded. A rural location: you’ll need a car to explore and reach local pubs and shops. No TV. WiFi but patchy phone reception.

  • "My wife and I spent the first couple of days of our honeymoon here. I can say without hyperbole that it is the best place I've ever stayed. In the middle of June and yet so quiet, so intimate. Glorious food in glorious surroundings. Please still be around on our silver anniversary!"
