*Brand new*
Skimming the treetops above a deep Cornish glade, this secluded modern house – with crisp lines, locally-quarried stone, and windows peeping out onto the woodland canopy – is the perfect place to gather a group for a memorable escape. Once the site of a hay barn, the build takes its aesthetic cues from an Italian Alpine farmhouse, using earthy tones and reclaimed materials to ground it in its natural landscape (the owners — a development and design duo — have had their work featured on Grand Designs, so their vision is incredible). There’s room for up to 10 people, but with 3 acres of orchard and valley to explore, 2 living rooms, and swings and nooks aplenty, you might have to ring a bell for dinner. Children will sleep soundly after days by the sea, cycling the Camel Trail and stream dipping on-site, while adults will enjoy birdsong-bathed morning cups of coffee on the patio, or indulgent soaks in the tub-with-a-view down the valley.

Walk down a bridleway to the golden beach at Mawgan Porth, where Mermaid Pools form at low tide, and gentle, rolling waves are perfect for learning to surf (experts can zip over to Newquay or Watergate Bay instead). Later, linger to watch one of the beach’s signature sunsets, then head back to the house for a candlelit Cornish feast inside or out, depending on the season, and the sound of silence.

Getting here: drive, or train to Newquay/Bodmin Parkway then taxi (15/25 mins), or fly to Newquay then taxi (5 mins)

“This was our second self-build, having completed a modern, single-storey home nearby in 2018, which was featured in an episode of Grand Designs. This time, we went for a more traditional style with contemporary details and reclaimed materials. We chose colours within Edward Bulmer’s warm and earthy-toned palette to create calming spaces. We wanted it to feel like a family home, with a practical and uncomplicated layout.” Owners, Harry & Briony

My Kip favourites

They love
“Cooking for friends and family in the kitchen – it’s a wonderful open dining space with doors opening onto the terrace.”

We love
How the leafy views permeate through the picture windows; you can bird-watch from the bath and gaze across the treetops from the kitchen sink (washing-up never felt so good).

You may not love
A 3, 5 or 7-night minimum stay (see Specifics). A steep grassy bank; you may need to watch young children there. Weak phone reception but good WiFi. The garden is not secure for dogs so they must be supervised.

  • "We had a fantastic week here. The location is easy to access and perfect for escaping the crowds and the surroundings are idilic - total peace and quiet, complete privacy, acres of space, yet still close to dozens of fantastic beaches and other great day trips for the family. The house itself is incredible and the views are spectacular. The house is light and spacious with really comfortable beds and sofas. It’s beautifully furnished with high quality finishes and just really practical for a family group of all ages. It was perfect for us and we’ll definitely be re-booking."
