Space & setting.

If there was ever a house made for cosy escapes, it’s this gorgeous 16thC cottage in the Peak District. Tucked away down a quiet lane in a peaceful village, it’s giving us The Holiday vibes; in snow it would be just magical. Come in winter and enjoy festive feasts at the excellent local pub and doorstep jaunts across frosty moors, followed by evenings of board games by the fire with mugs of cocoa (OK, mulled wine). In December there’s even a twinkling tree for a little extra magic. But it’s just as lovely in summer too, with its south-facing courtyard garden for alfresco dining, and fantastic location for exploring the National Park.

The setting may be quaint, but the interiors feel fresh: a smart kitchen with bold black cabinetry and brass finishes, a mid-century floral backdrop for the dining table and accents of deep teal mixed with repurposed furniture from family attics and antique markets. Cloud-soft beds, cute window seats and plump velvet sofas all add to the charm. Pack your walking boots and camera; this is a really beautiful part of the world.

Getting here: drive, or train to Buxton, Hathersage, Chesterfield or Sheffield, then taxi (20-40 mins)

Owner Holborn Cottage

“We were looking for a bolthole to escape normal life and spend more time with friends, then in 2019 we fell in love with this cottage — the 16thCstone window and window seat, the old thick walls and lovely village of Litton. I love repurposing furniture where possible, so lots of items are from our family homes or local antique centres.” Owners, Abi and Ian

  • "WOW!! We absolutely loved our stay here. The cottage was well equipped, super clean and comfortable. We loved the bedroom in particular, with stunning countryside views. We went mid November and it was so chilly out, but the cottage was constantly warm and cosy (especially with the log burner on!). The village is very quiet but has a cracking pub with great food, it was a perfect countryside escape for me and my partner."

  • "Wonderful, wonderful stay. Beautifully designed, peaceful, well-equipped and so cosy. Lovely walks and surroundings and the local pub was so cosy and walkable. Useful local village shop minutes away. Larger shops, pubs, farm shops and restaurants an easy drive. Easy to access Bakewell/Buxton plus walks. Cannot recommend a stay enough, the place was warm, pretty and clean. Beds comfortable and the entire cottage furnished and designed clearly by an artistic eye. We felt very welcomed."

FAQs.

Sorry, no, this is a pet-free property.

Yes, there’s a private space for 1 car,  across the track from the cottage. Parking diagonally it’s possible to fit a VW Touran/Kia Nero sized car. If you drive a larger/ longer vehicle there’s free off-street parking in a small carpark over the road, and ample unrestricted free parking on the roads throughout the village.

Not at the cottage, but there are type 2 charge points in Millers Dale station  (with a cafe, 2.5 miles). There are Tesla changing points at the Cavendish Hotel Baslow and in Bakewell.

Yes Waitrose, Ocado and Sainsburys deliver to the door, other supermarkets may also. While you stay, there is large well stocked Co-op and a Aldi in Bakewell. There is a Cook concession at Spar White’s in Calver.

It is in a village and there are residential houses and working farms nearby. Occasional people will walk past, but the cottage is located on a private dead end lane. The property is attached to another cottage on one side, but thick walls mean you are unlikely to hear any noise inside the building.

During December – early Jan, we dress the cottage for Christmas with a 6ft decorated tree in the sitting room. Plus a few extra touches! The welcome hamper also takes on a more festive vibe.
