Space & setting.

This contemporary-chic cabin offers indoor-outdoor living at its most relaxed. Going with the grain of the original 1960s chalet, it’s been completely restored with a dramatic black weatherboard exterior. Inside, beautiful modern furnishings, en vogue greys, pinks and greens, and expansive windows that flood the space with natural light. Think cool Scandi summer house, on the coast of North Devon.

With 2 almost-identical double bedrooms and a bunk room, it’s ideal for friends or families. You don’t have to be a surfer to stay here, but if you’re game for catching waves, you’re in the ideal spot – the path to Croyde Bay winds right past the door and there are 2 belly boards to borrow. Alternatively, it’s a short drive to Woolacombe’s little bays for sheltered sea swims and shell seeking, and you’re right by the Tarka Trail for cycling along stunning coastline. Or just chill out here. Drink your morning coffee to the soundtrack of the sea, dip in and out of the hot tub, and walk into town for dinner. Easy does it.

Getting here: best to drive but once here you can walk almost everywhere

“We used to come to Croyde on holiday and we were increasingly reluctant to return to SW London, so took the plunge to move here and raise our girls by the sea. We dreamed of owning one of these traditional chalets, with a gate to the beach path. When we finally found and bought one, rather than knocking it down and building something much bigger in its place, like so many people have done here, we retained the traditional footprint and added outdoor living space, too, with seating, cooking and a hot tub.” Owners Rachel and Jim
My Kip favourites

They love
“Sitting outside and listening to the waves, and the chatter of happy people — small children, sandcastle makers and surfers — excitedly making their way to the beach.”

We love
The vintage-style leather armchair and the pretty pink bathroom.

  • “Spent a lovely week here with the family. The cabin was superb, had every convenience and was in the most glorious location. It was close enough to access all parts of Croyde but if you didn't want to venture out and fancied a lazy day, then the views across the sand dunes were magnificent and many an hour could be whiled away just looking out over the dunes. We hope to return in the future. Rachel and Jim are on hand and are wonderful hosts. Highly recommended.”

Sustainability.

The chalet was a sensitive restoration of an old building. It is well insulated, with electricity from a green supplier and an electric car charging point.

Surrounds.

  • Surfing: you’re right on one of Devon’s best surfing beaches. Croyde Bay is our go-to for beginners who want to attempt the waves – you can book lessons or hire boards locally. Or just use the cabin’s belly boards for an easier rush!
  • Croyde village is a 5-minute walk. Grab a post-swim refuel at the street-food vans in summer (we love Tambapanni’s incredible Sri Lankan fare), or head to Blue Groove café for a laid-back lunch.
  • Walk around the headland to National Trust’s Baggy Point, where you can brave coasteering or just enjoy the views.
  • Bring bikes to cycle a stretch of the 180-mile, traffic-free Tarka Trail to Instow. Or follow the path in the opposite direction, behind Putsborough beach to Woolacombe, stopping off at The Porthole for great coffee and cake.
  • For hands-down the best fish and chips in the area, visit Squires in Braunton. From there, it’s just a 10-minute drive back to Saunton Sands if you want to eat them from the paper, accompanied by a sea breeze.
  • Secluded Barricane Beach, with its tidal rock pools and cowrie-lined shore, is the most romantic place to watch the sunset. Take picnic blankets and make this your early evening dinner spot, with a take-out curry from the little beach café (served 5-7pm).
