Nothing’s quite as synonymous with big skies and wilderness as a vintage Airstream trailer, so this one feels right at home marooned on a remote hilltop, with wraparound views of a moody sea loch and the rugged Trottenish mountains. Hailing all the way from the wide-open roads of Ohio, the classic 1969 beauty was imported and lovingly restored by its owners and a local shipbuilder during lockdown. Handcrafted ply interiors and soft curved corners invoke its 60s heyday; a turntable, stack of vinyl and vintage leather sofa complete the look. Even in the wildest of weather it’s cosy inside, and you may glimpse the aurora borealis from your window, painting the sky with neon strobes from April to October.

Skye is as captivating as the hype: an extraordinary playground of craggy peaks, mythical fairy pools and seascapes to inspire a thousand watercolours. It’s incredibly peaceful on this northwest tip of the island yet teeming with life – from wandering red deer to white-tailed eagles and sea otters in the loch far below. A pod of orca and minke whales return here each year and we can totally understand why. We’d happily do the same to cosy up in this unique trailer-for-2, listening to vinyl, drinking coffee on the deck, and watching technicolour rainbows arch over the Atlantic.

Getting here: you’ll need to drive.

“We first visited Skye 20 years ago when we spent 3 weeks here on honeymoon. It was in the middle of December so the weather was wild but mesmerising with lashings of rain, gales and brilliantly clear night skies where we could visibly see the Milky Way. We were both living and working in London but we were captivated with this island and this feeling never left us. Years later, with 2 very young children we found a small plot of land on on the northwest tip and moved lock, stock and barrel.” Owners Denise and Paul

  • "We absolutely loved staying in Betsy. It was a wonderful place to call home while exploring the beautiful Isle of Skye. We loved listening to all the different vinyls at the end of the day and felt so relaxed during our stay. We would definitely want to stay here again and would highly recommend it. Thank you Paul and Denise for making the first few days of our trip so memorable."

  • "A unique and fantastic place to stay in a beautiful location. The trailer looks out over a beautiful bay and some spectacular scenery on the western side of the island, in the village of Fiscavaig. Denise spent months turning a run-down Airstream that had been imported from America into a gleaming thing of beauty (I've seen the before and after photos, and the transformation is incredible). The inside of the airstream is so welcoming and cosy, with a really comfortable bed, a shower that works well (way better than a lot of hotel showers I've used!) and kitchen facilities (hob, oven, fridge,). Brilliantly, there's a record player and vinyl LPs in the lounge area, as well as plenty of books to read. Skye gets some impressive winds, but the Airstream stays warm and cosy even when it's blowing a gale outside. I stayed for four nights (I might have even been the first person there!) and absolutely loved it. I can't recommend it enough, especially for anyone who wants a completely different and unique experience."

Surrounds.

  • Aurora, Skye
    .
  • Wild swimming is a must, in the island’s numerous sea lochs and freshwater pools. Perhaps the most magical is a sunset dip in the fairy pools at the foot of the Black Cuillin mountains.
  • Lunch on the freshest seafood at the rustic Oyster Shed, overlooking Loch Harport in Carbost (15 mins’ drive). If whisky’s your thing, wash it down with a wee dram at the nearby Talisker Distillery.
  • A beautiful 2-mile local walk leads to the Taigh Ailean pub at Portnalong, and big plates of just-caught fish and chips. We also love the Old Inn in Carbost, serving Scots classics such as Highland steaks and haggis strudel, with live music nights in summer.
  • Further afield, clamber up the Old Man of Storr, around the spectacular Quairaing, or head to the Cuillin range to conquer a ‘Munro’ (a mountain in Scotland over 3,000ft). The inaccessible ‘Pinnacle’ on the Black Cuillin is one of the most challenging peaks in the UK.
  • Try coasteering in the wild Atlantic with Skye Adventure. Swim, jump and climb, exploring hidden caves and sea stacks.
  • Take a boat trip from Elgol out to famous Loch Coruisk, one of Scotland’s most-isolated lochs – the artist Turner’s favourite place in Scotland.
  • Head north to Michelin-starred restaurant Loch Bay, in the 18thC Thomas Telford-designed fishing village of Stein, with its beautiful views of the Waternish peninsula.
