Space & setting.

The owner of this cabin has a sense of style that, quite simply, sparks joy: from the vintage Sunblest bread crates repurposed as shelves to the gorgeous, glossy Moroccan zellige tiles, her cool, quirky taste is immaculate. Hand-picked interiors are largely from independent, female-run and sustainable sources, such as textiles by sister-run Sunday Living and retro lockers as bedside tables by Mustard Made. And although there’s a mish-mash of rustic and recycled materials scattered throughout the cabin – linens by Toetoe, hand-crafted furniture by Kiwi & Copper, dried flowers from Pixie & Piper – it still feels uncluttered and airy, thanks to giant windows that open up to a field of wildflowers and sea views.

An outdoor balcony overlooks Portballintrae Bay and the striking Causeway coast on one side, and a custom-made, wood-fired hot tub provides views of Donegal, Bushmills and Port Stewart on the other. Let the kids run free in the meadow as you soak, or take them to beaches, just 2 miles away, for sandcastling and rock-pooling. Once home, light a wood sage and sea salt candle and refuel with cakes from Karen’s Farmhouse Kitchen or a BBQ in the garden. Just be sure you sit out for sunset; they’re famous round this way.

Getting here: best to drive

“We wanted to build a hideaway to benefit from the amazing view in this spot, over Portballintrae and the surrounding countryside. Sustainability was an important factor in the interior design; almost all the decor details are second hand, vintage or antique. I like to buy second hand as it allows me to customise pieces to suit the look I am trying to create and gives a more unique feel.” Owner, Olive

My Kip favourites

She loves
“The big skies overhead, that are always shifting, like an ever-changing painting.”

We love
The ecletic interiors: raffia and dried pampas grasses paired with shell-pink tiles, antique floral art, gorgeous lighting and chic rustic touches. Olive has the most brilliant eye, pulling together so many trends.

  • "Myself and 3 others stayed for 3 nights and it was amazing. Olive was more than helpful and ensured we had everything we needed for our stay. The cabin itself was beautifully decorated and the hot tub was a lovely addition! We would highly recommend."

  • Barn Door Coffee in nearby Coleraine does a banging brunch using locally sourced ingredients like Aghadowey eggs.
  • The Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills Railway is the best way to see this scenic limestone shoreline; kids will love the novelty factor.
  • Beneath the limestone cliffs of the North Coast is surf hotspot Whiterocks Beach – don’t forget your wetsuit, wax and board (or hire it all when you get here).
  • Take the kids to Rose Park Farm, to feed goats, pet kittens and paddle in Northern Ireland’s only inland ‘beach’
  • Game of Thrones fans can visit Castle Greyjoy! Just head to historic Bushmills, where the crumbling basalt outcrop of Dunluce Castle was its setting. The cafe does superb cheese toasties from Maegden with homemade pickles.
