Magazine-style interiors and foodie Orford on your doorstep - a perfect Suffolk base for 2
Space & setting.
A Scandi-styled bolthole for 2 in the foodie village of Orford, this is ideal for a slow Suffolk staycation. High, beamed ceilings together with a panel of floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light and look out onto the private garden beyond. Brew up a coffee and sprawl out on a cushioned sunlounger, enjoying views of the 12thC Orford Castle — and the peace.
The village centre is just a short stroll away and full of curiosities. Dangle a crab line at the historic Norman quay, walk the dog along the meandering riverbank footpaths, book a bird-watching boat trip on the river or sit sample the famous oysters which have been farmed and smoked here since the 1950s – some guests barely leave the village boundary. But as you’ll need to drive here, you may as well explore further afield, too! Southwold, Aldeburgh, Walberswick, they’re all easy day trips.

Surrounds.
- Wander into the village for some just-caught seafood. The Butley Orford Oysterage dishes up fresh oysters and delicious smoked fish.
- Long riverside walks are best followed by a hot chocolate and raspberry donut at the Pump Street Bakery, also in the village.
- Neighbouring Orford Ness (National Trust) is a peaceful nature conservation site. With habitats including shingle, brackish lagoons, reed marshes and mud flats, there’s fantastic bird- and wildlife-watching opportunities. Expect marsh harriers, falcons, oyster catchers and Chinese deer.
- Day trip to Southwold, Aldeburgh and Walbeswick for stunning coastal walks and days on the beach.
- Or hire a paddleboard to explore the Iken waterways – particularly beautiful at sunset. If you’re lucky, you might see wild seals.
- Dine at the Crown & Castle, a handsome red-brick restaurant with rooms in the shadow of Orford Castle, which serves excellent dishes centred on local produce.
- Take a wine-tasting tour at Flint Vineyard, which established vines here to capitalise on Suffolk’s low rainfall and sunny days – said to be one of the county’s newest and most exciting producers.
