A luxe eco cabin hidden in 7 acres of ancient woodland (sleeps 4-5).
Space & setting.
There’s something incredibly earthy about hunkering down in a log cabin amidst an ancient woodland, especially when you find out the owners hand-built it themselves from the mighty Herefordshire oaks that surround you. Completely eco friendly, it took several years to complete and the detail in the build is amazing. If only there were an Ikea flatpack equivalent.
This is a place to slow right down and immerse yourselves in nature. Tune into harmonious birdsong from the moment you awake; breakfast outside and watch house martins swoop above you. Walks in the stunning countryside will nourish your soul. There’s a rope swing for kids; a local pub for excellent lunches and dinners. And as the sun sets you can sit and toast marshmallows over the firepit then gaze at incredible night skies. No everyday distractions, just peace, idyllic views all the way to Ludlow and cosy luxury in the great outdoors.

Sustainability.
Full marks for eco friendliness: the cabin was handbuilt from local timber, stone and reclaimed slate, with breathable lime in the concrete, mortars and plasters, which takes less energy to produce than its modern equivalents. A ground-source heat pump feeds the underfloor heating and hot-water system, while a wood-burning stove keeps the indoors extra-cosy on winter nights, using the abundant firewood on site.
Surrounds.
- Countryside walks fan out from the front door. Start with a spectacular amble to the Wigmore Castle ruins, with views like a Constable painting.
- Go quietly as you roam the ancient woodland and field and you may see wild deer and rabbits. Children will love building forest dens and running free.
- It’s a mile to The Oak, for drinks and upmarket pub grub. Or drive to The Riverside Inn in Aymestrey, which has won many ‘Best in Herefordshire’ awards.
- Hopton Woods is brilliant for mountain biking, with colour-coded trails for all abilities, right up to black for the pros (15 mins’ drive).
- Cool off in summer with a wild swim at Burrington Bridge.
- On rainy days get lost in Aardvark Books, a bookshop and cafe in the village of Brampton Bryan. Or explore Ludlow’s foodie independents.
- Further afield, drive to the stunning Elan Valley (1 hour, over the border into Wales). Take in the incredible Victorian dams that provide Birmingham’s water as you do a walk or bike ride, and keep an eye out for red kites wheeling above you.
