Space & setting.

You’re likely here to go walking in the Peak District, and with pretty Alstonefield village as your base, that’ll be amongst the White Peak’s limestone dales and lush green valleys. Dovedale, Thorpe Cloud, Milldale: they’re all close by, with paths leading almost from your front door. But of equal beauty is this romantic little cottage you’ll return to, with its gorgeous blend of ancient and modern styles. Flint walls, a slate hearth and original wooden beams imbue it with character, whilst dove-grey panelling and sheepskin rugs add a contemporary Nordic vibe. Though there’s a very stylish kitchen, you can eschew cooking completely, if you prefer. Wander down the hill and you’ll find The George, dishing up award-winning food – pink Derbyshire lamb with market vegetables; white chocolate mousse and a peach compote. Everything’s in place for the easiest of escapes – you just need to decide when to come.

Getting here: you’ll need to drive.

Owners of Peak District Barn and Cottage

The cottage sits within a private estate, owned by Rob and Jo, who have lived in the village for 25 years. They run the manor house as a B&B and are there if you need them, discreet if you’d prefer to be private. They spent years rebuilding and restoring the estate’s various outbuildings, including this one, which in the 1800s belonged to the full-time gardener.

My Kip favourites

They love
“Sitting in the garden with a drink, listening to the evening bird chorus and soft chimes of the church clock.”

We love
The estate has an acre of walled gardens you’re free to roam, with lavender-fringed flowerbeds and red-gold trees in autumn. In the background, Peak District views stretch for miles.

You may not love
The bathroom is downstairs and is shower only (no tub). The staircase is steep. No children allowed. You’ll need to drive to get here and to reach shops (bring everything with you). The beamed ceiling in the lounge is low (6″6).

  • "Excellent location, an easy drive to all the wonders of the South Peaks and beyond. Immaculate, well equipped little cottage, which is tiny in an intimate cosy way and thoughtfully designed to maximise light and space. You have a private little terrace and access to one of the gorgeous garden lawns with views across the fields. We stayed four nights and enjoyed a combination of walks, visits to country estates, delicious pub food and hygge at home. Communication with and recommendations from Rob (and Jo) our hosts were perfect. Highly recommended especially if you are new to visiting this beautiful area."

  • "Our stay at the cottage was exactly what we hoped, cosy interiors set in beautiful grounds. We were able to take long walks straight from our doorstep, and enjoy the surroundings from the garden in the evenings. We can't wait to book again in the future."

  • We just returned from 3 nights staying in the cottage and everything was exceptional; from the picturesque location, the welcome, attention to detail and local insight provided by hosts Rob and Jo, and the cottage itself which is faultlessly designed to catalogue perfection.
