*Brand new*
Nowhere is that edge-of-the-world feeling more apparent than on the wild west coast of Scotland, where mountains meet the sea and mist-wreathed crags and islands whisper tales from long ago. Calm and serene, this cottage in lovely Plockton overlooks it all — so close to the shoreline that you can watch sailboats come and go through giant picture windows but so utterly calm and serene you feel a million miles from anywhere. It might look bijou but there’s space in every sense of the word thanks to the skilled architect owners, whose deft use of natural materials like clay blocks and Highland-grown timber makes it feel as though the cottage is woven into the very fabric of the land. The craftmanship is exquisite too, from drystone walling to the bespoke kitchen made from Douglas fir. An earthy natural palette gravitates from the walls, lined in unpainted clay plaster, to the softest linen bedding, and terracotta floor tiles, heated, of course.

It’s easy to idle away hours here, watching the shifting seascape and reading, but do carve out some time for exploring. There are coastal paths to walk, pretty bays for swimming, and a couple of great restaurants and pubs. The Isle of Skye is tantalisingly close, too, tempting you across the wind-ruffled water. Drive, train or ferry across (look out for seals en route) and mosey around Portree with its Lego-bright houses. Or venture further afield if you’ve got a car: try climbers’ nemesis The Old Man of Storr, or hike 45 mins to the Point of Sleat in the less-touristy south, where a deserted white-sand beach and ridiculously turquoise waters await.

Getting here: drive, or train from Inverness to Plockton then walk. The Caledonian Sleeper calls at Inverness.

“Megan and I are both architects and had long dreamt about designing a small and carefully considered house in the Highlands. We wanted it to communicate the value of craftsmanship, local skills, and the inherent quality and calmness that natural materials bring to a space. We set out to build without using plastic or structural steel, and this led us to a construction method using clay blocks, clay plaster, local timber, and wood fibre insulation. We’ve extended this ethos into the furnishings, selecting hand-crafted pieces, and all natural products throughout. Contemporary buildings tend to be very much set apart from nature, but we have a strong sense that they should be treated more like an extension of it and better connect us to the environment.” Owners, Colin and Megan

My Kip favourites

They love
“T
he bathroom, which has a frameless roof window above the bath and shower. It’s quite atmospheric, and a lovely space to get ready for the day slowly.”

We love
The living space, which sits below a high vaulted ceiling made from locally sourced timber. From the sofa, you can sit in front of the woodburner, with a view out across the bay towards the hills beyond, or sit and read in an enviable Wegner-designed lounge chair.

You may not love
A 2 or 3-night min stay. Additional cleaning fee applies. Not secluded, but surrounded by a small private garden. Sorry, no pets. Adults only.

  • “The biggest challenge has been to decide whether to enjoy the utter beauty that surrounds us outside, or to stay and enjoy the beauty and comfort inside. We found the perfect balance and saw the Isle of Skye with blue skies, sunshine, and snow-covered mountain tops! The balance of luxury, practical design, attention to every detail, and some Danish ‘Hygge’ makes this place our best stay ever!”

Sustainability.

“Sustainability is central to our ethos. We didn’t want to use any plastic or structural steel in the build, which led to a traditional construction method using clay blocks, clay plaster, local timber, and wood-fibre insulation. We use all natural bedding – cotton and linen bedding from Toast, duvet and pillows from Woolroom, all over a wool-topped eco-mattress. We supply ecological cleaning products and soaps, plastic-free teabags, and hand-thrown tableware. We encourage recycling and sustainable travel.”

Surrounds.

  • Aurora, Skye

  • Pack your swimmers and stroll  along the old crofting track to Coral Beach, a little crescent cove that’s perfect for a bracing dip. Look out for fellow wild swimmers — otters — as well as red squirrels and pine martens on dry land.
  • Hikers are spoilt with 20 surrounding munros, including the spectacular Cuillin for experienced climbers, or the more accessible Plockton Crags, which can be reached on foot from the cottage. Those who make it to the top of either will be gifted 360-degree views of the surrounding lochs and peaks (and stiff muscles the following day).
  • For supplies, Rowan Barn  sells eggs, homemade jams & chutneys, rare-breed meat and fresh veg, plus local seafood on request, plucked from the sea daily. There’s also a small shop for essentials in the Plockton Shores restaurant; stay on for a lunch of fresh mussels or scallops
  • Join a boat trip onto Loch Kishorn to see seals and dolphins playing against a dramatic backdrop of Applecross mountains. Go at sunset, and you’ll get a wee dram thrown in.
  • Day trip to Skye. The owners recommend the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing for steep ascents to stunning views; The Old Inn at Carbost for freshly lined-in fish and live traditional music; Armadale Castle, for its Clan Donald Museum and woodland walks, and the Sleat Peninsula in the south, which has a stunning white-sand beach at its tip. Don’t leave the island without a tasting the smoky single malt from Talisker Distillery.
  • Or drive to Wester Ross’ Attadale Gardens for potent coffee and a stroll around the grounds, particularly lovely in summer. Daydream in the water gardens or seek inspiration in the vegetable garden.

It’s generally stable and there’s also 4G signal on most networks.

Unfortunately not. The owners love dogs but the design isn’t suited to pets.

No, it’s situated in a village, close to a playpark and a single lane track. It’s very quiet in the winter, but can be bustling on summer afternoons. The small private garden provides some seclusion and there are natural linen blinds / curtains throughout, which let in ample light but provide total privacy should you wish.

Depending on how late, you may be able to eat in Plockton; book ahead though. Alternatively bring what you need for the first night.
