Traditional charm meets creative style at this 2-bed coastal cottage near Dartmouth (sleeps 4)
Space & setting.
In the heart of a pretty clifftop village on the spectacular S Devon coast, this 2-bed cottage has been many things across the centuries: a barn, a boat workshop, a home, and at one point an artist’s studio. Now owned by a writer, it’s easy to see why this unique retreat sparks the creative imagination. Upon entering, you’re instantly wowed by a glorious open-plan living space, stripped back to the rafters with 2 sets of French doors bringing a sea view right in. Skylights drench the room in sunshine, and the fresh, natural palette, textured linens and sheepskin accents strike that perfect balance between calm and cosy.
As for the location, even Kirsty and Phil couldn’t have done better. Everything you could possibly want from a S Devon escape is on the doorstep, from brilliant local pubs and maritime towns to clifftop walks and secret coves. Best of all, Blackpool Sands – one of Devon’s most beautiful beaches – is an easy stroll away.

Sustainability.
“Green electricity and locally made furnishings keep our carbon footprint low, and furniture is sustainably made, upcycled, or second-hand where possible. We supply vegan toiletries for guests (with biodegradable packaging) and compostable coffee pods.”
Surrounds.
- There’s no better start to the day than a swim at Blackpool Sands, followed by coffee and a breakfast roll from the Venus Beach Café.
- For a day of true beachy seclusion, keep following the path from Blackpool Sands to Landcombe Cove: a ‘secret’ beach only accessible on foot or by boat.
- The Green Dragon is a cracking local, with a fantastic beer garden, live music nights, great food, roaring fires in the colder months, even its own gin. Or walk to Radius 7, a chic bar/restaurant specialising in local produce (all sourced within a 7-mile radius of the village).
- The cottage is right on the South West Coastal Path, meaning spectacular walks right from the front door. Head to the maritime town of Dartmouth via country lanes and woodland, with non-stop stunning clifftop vistas. Bring your swimmers for a dip at Sugary Cove along the way.
- Take a ferry from Dartmouth to Greenway, Agatha Christie’s summer home on the banks of the river Dart. Then ring the bell on the Greenway quay to call a water taxi to take you across to pretty Dittisham for a pint in the Ferry Boat Inn.
- Back in Dartmouth, Andria is S Devon’s hottest new restaurant, recently awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand.
- Learn to surf at Bantham Beach. The unusual topography means that experienced surfers can catch the larger waves at the mouth of the river Avon, while beginners can cut their teeth on the gentle surf that rolls in like clockwork across the sand.
- Visit Burgh Island with its famous Art Deco hotel, beloved by The Beatles. At low tide the island can be reached on foot, but at high tide you’ll need to catch Devon’s most eccentric mode of public transport: a Sea Tractor. The island’s pub is a 13thC smugglers haunt.
- Wine lovers can wander deep into Blackpool Valley straight from the cottage, for a private wine tasting at the rather magical Michael Sutton’s Wine Cellar.
