*Brand new*
An off-grid, off-line dream, these beautiful cabins set on a working farm will have you slowing down to reconnect with the land and – if you’re travelling with partners/family/friends — each other. Taking cues from Danish design, the bright pine and clean lines balance minimalism and warmth in a perfectly cosy, clutter-free space that’s as inviting as it is immersive in the rural countryside of Tarporley, where rolling green hills, pasture and woodlands stretch out in all directions.

The combination of cool, contemporary design is balanced with playful, nostalgic details that encourage guests to go analogue: a cassette player (complete with tapes by The Police and the Pointer Sisters), books on cosmic events, and card games to play as the log burner crackles in the background. Both cabins have outdoor seating so you can enjoy your morning cup of Dark Arts Coffee as the curious Shetland cows and Valais Blacknose sheep graze nearby (even if you’re travelling solo or seeking solitude, you’ll never be totally alone here). Whether you want to hunker down with a stack of books and blankets or strike out into Cheshire’s countryside, these rural retreats have it all.

Getting here: drive, or train to Chester then taxi (25 mins)

Inside Tarporley Shacks, Cheshire

It all started a few years ago. Harry and George had always had a keen interest in building and constructing things — initially, it was treehouses, speakers and furniture, then they built their first cabin on Harry’s family farm. For a small structure, it was a little more complex than you might think. With composting loos, solar power, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom all integrated into a small space, the process threw up all sorts of challenges. Though it was stressful, they were delighted to create such a unique holiday experience with such a low carbon impact, and went on to create more. Their aim is to unlock amazing places for holiday makers all over the UK.

My Kip favourites

They love
The location. Just 40 mins from Liverpool or an hour from Manchester, to utter solitude.

We love
Being immersed by nature, but in hotel-style comfort, meaning long walks then deep sleeps in Piglet-in-Bed linens.

You may not love
Stays are Fri-Mon, or Mon-Fri only (3/4 nights). No WiFi. The cabins are truly off-grid, and the surroundings can be muddy and hostile in winter months.

  • "Three days spent in blissful peace, star gazing after a long day of hiking in the Welsh hills…Just the thing! Location is very easy to reach. The stylish cabin, affording stunning views, had every modern convenience, including an excellent shower, a fully stocked kitchen (a coffee grinder to boot!), and comfy bed. Little thoughtful details made the experience just that bit more special, like the personal note on arrival and board games: they’ve really thought of everything. Would highly recommend to those looking to unwind and get back to nature."

Sustainability.

The cabins are built from sustainable materials, and are fully off-grid, with solar power, compost toilets, and spring-fed water.
