Space & setting.

With French linen sheets, traditional shutters and the deafening silence of a sleepy English village, you’ll sleep so deeply at this gorgeous 17thC cottage on Dorset’s Isle of Purbeck. Its restored interiors were inspired by the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic, appreciating imperfections and prioritising simplicity: the natural tones, plump feather-filled sofas and tactile ceramics are all simply beautiful.

Two double bedrooms make it ideal for 2 couples or families with older children — or treat yourselves to an amazing holiday a deux, and luxuriate in all that space. The web of Studland footpaths fans out from your doorstep, through the pretty Purbeck Hills and around the 12thC Corfe Castle, built by William the Conqueror back in the day. Or drive to secret coves and wide beaches including Shell Bay and Durdle Door. Follow days out with leisurely drinks in one of 3 local pubs, then pick up dinner supplies at the village stores and wander home to cook. Our top tip? Eat in the garden whenever you can. This is a Dark Skies area, and if you’ve never stargazed in one before, you’ll be blown away.

Getting here: drive, or train to Wareham then taxi (10 mins)

Mark, The Purbeck Cottage, Dorset

“After watching an episode about Purbeck on National Trust Unlocked, we took a road trip and fell in love with it here. Coming from a background in construction and visual design, we were looking for a property to restore and found this cottage needing to be stripped back to its original bones. We spent every weekend for eight months working on it, alongside local trade people, to curate something beautiful yet sympathetic to the history of the cottage.” Owner, Mark

My Kip favourites

They love
“The proximity to some of the best beaches in the UK, coastal walks and rolling countryside.”

We love
The huge hearth framed by exposed stonework and beams, and the antique armchairs, mirrors and ceramics sourced from Dorchester and Bridport.

  • "This is a beautiful cottage with absolutely everything you could need for a peaceful stay in Dorset. It's in the heart of the town with easy access to a deli, pubs, and local sights and the house itself is charming, thoughtfully-designed, comfortable and warm. The little courtyard at the back is a lovely sheltered outdoor space too and the kitchen is very well stocked with equipment for cooking. The owners were very contactable and made everything seamlessly easy and welcoming. We had a brilliant time."

  • “My stay was absolutely perfect! The interiors throughout were stunning and so thoughtful. We slept so well, it was like sleeping on a cloud and waking to the church bells was delightful. The cottage is very cosy and well located in the heart of the village, which has some great pubs and cafes and lots of wonderful countryside walks straight from the front door. The beaches are a short drive away, too many to visit in the time we had and would love to stay again in the future to explore some more.”
