*New to Kip*

Ever feel like pressing pause on life and disappearing for a few days? This quirky little bolthole on the North Welsh border is where we’ll be escaping to next time we get that urge. Once a 19thC blacksmith’s workshop, it’s been beautifully restored with just enough space for the minibreak essentials: a kingsize bed, the cutest little kitchen and a fully stocked woodburner. Interiors are perfectly rustic and pared back; exposed brickwork and beams are moodily lit by ambient bare bulbs and the flicker of flames, while upstairs in the sleeping nook, iron railings have been fashioned from an old dog kennel.

Cool in summer and cosy in winter, it’s utterly unique and perfect for all seasons. Colder days call for luxuriously long lie-ins, slow morning soaks in the free-standing nickel bath and lazy evenings reading by the fire; when the sun is shining seek out local pubs, wild swimming spots, kayaking and nature walks (there are plenty of guidebooks for inspiration). Shropshire Hills, North Wales and Snowdonia are all within easy reach; personally, though, we’d just hole up and stay put. Whether you come alone or as a couple, you’ll return home a more rested version of yourself.

Getting here: drive, or train to Gobowen then taxi (5 mins)

“The Smithy was originally a Blacksmith’s, dating back to the early 1800s, with what we believe to have been living accommodation upstairs. It’s located on the edge of our walled garden within the woodland surrounding our home. We began restoration of the area in 2018, cutting back thick vegetation which had taken hold over the years. Eventually, in 2022, we were able to start rescuing the building hidden amongst it all. The layout remains as it would have been all those years ago, with a mezzanine floor for the bedroom and a cosy open living area downstairs.” Owners, Tom and Emma

My Kip favourites

They love
“Lighting the log burner on a dark winter’s evening and enjoying a good book or film.”

We love
Morning soaks in the nickel bathtub, which sits by a huge landscape window looking out onto nature.

It’s small – best for short breaks – with minimal storage. The bathroom is accessed from the side of the building. Not remote though you are private. Sorry, no dogs.

  • "The perfect place for weekend getaways and to escape into your own slice of the countryside. The accommodation is beautifully rustic and finished to a high standard. We loved the log fire, which Tom helpfully lit for us so that it was cosy and warm for our arrival! The Smithy is so unique with the mezzanine bed, which is very comfortable, and the large nickel bath is just fantastic. We loved waking up to the natural light and the sounds of the county. We really felt refreshed after our two nights there and just didn't want to leave. Emma and Tom were great hosts, really responsive and helpful and only a message away for advice and recommendations!"

Sustainability.

The property is mainly heated by the woodburner, fuelled from trees that have naturally fallen in the surrounding woodlands. Once cleared, the owners re-plant trees to replace the fallen ones.
