Space & setting.

Hidden amongst the vines of an organic vineyard that tumbles down the side of the Avon Gorge, the position of this hand-built cabin is extraordinary. The iconic Suspension Bridge is a few hundred metres away, masked by lush foliage but thrillingly close. Elegant Clifton village is above you, with its upmarket delis, restaurants and pavement cafe culture,  yet you’re almost in the countryside too: Ashton Court country park and Leigh Woods are only half a mile away for longer rambles and epic views over Bristol. Arrive here by train and you can spend the whole  stay on foot or 2 wheels.

The cabin is equally extraordinary, boho-chic style with beaded African chairs, rustic joinery, Moroccan cushions and  a little firepit area down the hill. Wall-to-wall glass floods the space with sunlight, and the views and peace just envelop you. And while there’s everything you need, from a piping hot shower to binoculars and a fan (plus inspirational extras to help you switch off — a guitar, yoga mat and excellent books), it feels cosy rather than cluttered; an unbelievable secret in the heart of the city. The owners live in the double Georgian house above and are the most warm and welcoming couple; both film makers. There’s a secret entrance to the garden should you want to be completely private, but we bet you’ll at least want to ask them how on earth a vineyard in central Bristol came about…

Getting here: train if you can (parking is tricky) then taxi from Bristol Temple Meads (15 mins)

Secret Bristol Cabin

Owners Jo and Andrew have lived in the main house for 14 years, raising their children here. They built the cabin for their own use initially; an extra bedroom for guests, and a ‘holiday at home’ space for themselves.

My Kip favourites

They love
“Waking up with some morning yoga on the deck.”

We loved
Nipping into Clifton for fresh pastries then breakfasting on the sun terrace.

You may not love
A vague hum of traffic at the bottom of the gorge, though you soon zone it out. No parking outside.

  • Pop to Chandos Deli upon wakening for pastries and takeaway coffee.
  • Or head to one of numerous cafés for brunch — opt for posh bistro breakfasts at The Ivy, alfresco classics in the sun outside Primrose Cafe, buckwheat and rye pancakes at Coppa Club or poolside mimosas with Turkish-style eggs at The Lido.
  • No trip to Bristol would be complete without a visit to Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge, just along the terrace from the cabin. Wander across, taking in the views of Clifton and the Avon Gorge below.
  • On the other side you’ll find Leigh Woods, a National Trust woodland. Visit in spring to wind your way through bluebells, or in autumn for dramatic blankets of red fallen leaves.
  • The entrance to Ashton Court Estate is over the bridge too; glorious parkland with epic views over Bristol, a decent cafe and a golf course. Doggie heaven, if you’ve brought yours with you.
  • Back in Clifton, browse the village’s bougie independents and antique shops, and wind up at The Avon Gorge Hotel for sundowners on their iconic terrace, which overlooks the bridge.
  • The Lido is one of Bristol’s gold spots: restored Victorian baths where you can swim alfresco, sauna, hot tub, and have a range of wellness treatments. Book ahead.
  • Nearby Park Street is lined with great shops, and leads down to the Cathedral and buzzy Docks area. There, Whapping Wharf offers foodie containers (Root is an amazing veggie restaurant or try Salt&Malt for takeaway fish & chips) and plenty of spots to sit with a drink in the sunshine.
