Space & setting.

Set in the unique, almost post-apocalyptic landscape of Dungeness, this Grade II-listed cottage is a thoughtfully renovated former lighthouse keeper’s residence, set beside the Old Lighthouse itself, which dates back to 1904. Its distinctive red chimneys stand out against the wild, desolate surroundings, but inside the atmosphere is homely and welcoming: gilt mirrors, beautiful fireplaces, and fresh flowers in speckled enamel mugs. Neutral tones of cream and greys are a backdrop for pops of colour found in patterned cushions and striped curtains, while raffia rugs, pressed flower artwork and pretty tiling add real charm. The terracotta floor in the hallway, with its arched doorway, is a particularly lovely feature.

Ideal for 2 couples or a small family (2 double bedrooms), it’s a place to be immersed in Dungeness’ wild beauty, but also a retreat from the elements; Britain’s only desert, this can be a windy or extremely hot place. The sheltered wildflower garden is a gorgeous spot for alfresco meals and drinks, and there are stunning views of sea and the surrounding nature reserve from every window. Long walks along the shingle beach will have you spotting shipwrecks, abandoned shacks, epic architectural builds and masses of birdlife. Then spend evenings cooking, playing games or just getting lost in a good book.

Getting here: train to Rye, then taxi (30 mins)

“Dungeness has been my family home for the last 30 years. My father, artist Martin Turner, bought the Roundhouse in the 90s (then without water or electricity), and I still live there today. I have always loved the vastness and elemental beauty of the landscape; There is a wildness here that is unique to this part of England. I managed the sensitive restoration of the 2 lighthouse keepers’ cottages next door, to create welcoming and comfortable sanctuaries from the wild surroundings.” Owner, Kathryn

  • "Second visit. Fabulous location and managed to get in to visit the nearby lighthouse. Kite flying great as so windy! The cottage is cosy, well equipped and comfortable with great log burners which were appreciated on the windy days."
