The very best places to stay in

Central Highlands

Stretching from the breathtaking Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park in the south, north through Perthshire, Loch Tay, and up toward the Cairngorm foothills, the Central Highlands offer a bewitching blend of dramatic scenery, gentle adventure, and easy access — making it one of the most beautiful and underrated regions for a slow travel. Geographically, it’s one of the most accessible parts of the Highlands — just a couple of hours from Glasgow and Edinburgh, yet it feels wonderfully remote.

The terrain is lush and varied: mirror lochs, ancient woodland, tumbling rivers, misty glens, and brooding mountains. For us, it’s the ideal Highland location — wild enough to feel like an escape, but with plenty of cosy pubs, artisan producers, and cultural gems to explore. See our Kip tips for the region below.

Our hideaways in the Scottish Central Highlands are handpicked for their individuality, connection to nature, and thoughtful design. Whether it’s a romantic off-grid cabin or a creative bolthole with mountain views, each one is independently owned and utterly unique.

Must do

Explore Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park — an outdoor paradise. Swim and SUP in Loch Lomond itself; fringed by wooded shores and scattered with islands it is utterly mesmerising. Watch the sun set over it from Balmaha or Luss. The Great Trossachs Forest is a haven for red squirrels, pine martens, and ospreys. Drive over Dukes Pass to experience its cinematic beauty.

Best activity

Hike in the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserves, one of Scotland’s most botanically rich munro regions, for panoramic views and alpine flora. We also love swim and kayaking on Loch Tay, a glassy loch surrounded by snow-dusted peaks in winter.

Secret Kip tip

The rugged Arrochar Alps offers incredible hiking and scrambling for more adventurous souls. The Cobbler (Ben Arthur) is the best-known peak — a short, sharp ascent with jaw-dropping views from the summit.

With kids

Highland Safaris, near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, is a brilliant, hands-on day out for all ages. Kids can meet red deer and barn owls, hop into a Land Rover for a guided mountain safari, pan for gold, and go on woodland walks with interactive learning about local wildlife and history.
