The very best places to stay in

Cheshire

From the honeyed glow of its market towns to walking in the wild, ancient woodlands of Delamere Forest and canoeing along the tranquil River Dee, the charm of Cheshire doesn’t shout; it whispers. It’s a great mix of incredible Roman history — city walls, gardens, and an iconic amphitheatre — and modern appeal: the artisan shops of Tarporley and Nantwich, and the farm-to-table dining scene of Knutsford. It’s also a popular hub for outdoorsy folk who want to hike the Sandstone Trail or use it as a base for day trips to the Peak District, the Clywdians and even Snowdonia.

With kids

Chester Zoo is often called the UK’s best zoo. With over 3000 animals including iconic species like Sumatran tigers, giraffes and snow leopards, it’s also lauded for its large, naturalistic habitats and conservation efforts.

Foodie treat

We love the traditional Polish dumplings at Pierogi in Chester; an authentic but tiny restaurant where diners gather round sturdy wooden tables and watch the dumplings being hand-prepared as they wait.

Best activity

Walk a stretch of the 34-mile Sandstone Trail that cuts through beautiful woodlands, farmland and valleys all the way into Shropshire. Follow the Raw Head circular section for epic views over Cheshire from the trail’s highest point, and keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels as you hike.
