The very best places to stay in

Cornwall

Cornwall’s captivating coastlines and charming fishing villages are always in fashion. Though it may seem a slog to go this far southwest, once you’re stretched out on a golden sandy beach, surfing the world-famous swells and dazzling your tastebuds with the incredible foodie scene, you’ll realise it was worth every mile (top tip: come by sleeper train and awake in Penzance, ready to go!). Our curation of hideaways in Cornwall stretches across the county, north to south, east to west. We’ve got glamping with hot tubs, swimming pools with sea views, family-friendly cottages, romantic shepheds huts and big houses for groups. Most, of course, are dog friendly, in a paw salute to our own hounds. Buzzy and golden in summer, beautifully peaceful in winter, Kernow offers very different charms at different time of year. When will you come?

Architecture.

We love the Victorian Lanhydrock Estate, dating back to 1630, with its huge grounds above the River Fowey (this design house sits nearby). Iconic St Michael’s Mount is another gem; check it out from the bath at this romantic cottage. Best of all, the incredible Minack theatre, which clings to the cliff about idyllic Porthcurno beach; both a must-visit when you come.

Must visit.

Idyllic fishing villages. From trendy Mousehole to quaint Mevagissey and smuggler’s haunt Clovelly, where donkeys once pulled carts up vertiginous hills.

The Eden Project is the most fabulous eco enterprise that’s home to the world’s largest indoor rainforest and a Mediterranean biome. Endlessly fascinating.

Foodie treat.

Whether you’re a fish-and-chips-on-the-beach kinda guy or drawn to Rick Stein’s empire and Nathan Outlaw’s Michelin-starred restaurants, the sheer quality of eateries down here will delight you. Our favourite is The Gurnard’s Head; gastro pub extraordinaire.

Best activity.

Exploring the art scene in St Ives – tiny independent galleries, the magnificent Tate, and Barbara Hepworth’s inimitable sculpture garden.

Secret Kip tip.

Tucked away on the remote Roseland Peninsula, the Hidden Hut dishes up the freshest food and wonderful feast nights. Chowders, spiced dhals, grilled mackerel and sardines from the day boats and huge garden salads. BYO blanket, plates, cutlery and wine.
