The very best places to stay in Cumbria and the Lake District
When you think of Cumbria and the Lake District, your mind likely conjures images of shimmering lakes framed by towering fells, and quaint stone villages. But this region is far more than just dramatic views. It’s a patchwork of rugged beauty and a timeless way of life. William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge once found inspiration here, in the stone walls, quiet woodlands, and hidden corners of the area. Beyond the beauty, the district is a living testament to centuries of rural life— working farms, heritage buildings, and a landscape that’s been shaped by generations of people living in close connection to the land.
Within an hour’s drive, you can go from the bustling market town of Penrith to the untouched, remote hills of the Howgills, or the dramatic cliffs of the western coastline. Lakes like Coniston Water and Bassenthwaite are steeped in local legends, while rivers like the Esk and the Lune flow through valleys that have barely changed for centuries. And while Windermere and Keswick draw plenty of visitors, the charm of the region lies in the quieter corners: the winding roads of the Eden Valley, the peaceful forests of Grizedale, and the hidden coves along the Solway Coast.
Kip tips:
· Must-visit: Sedbergh is an unspoiled market town with a strong literary heritage. Browse local bookshops, enjoy a pint in the historic George & Dragon, and explore the nearby Howgill Fells, which offer some of the region’s best quiet hikes.
· With kids: visit Muncaster Castle, plus its serene gardens and bird-of-prey centre, where you can have a one-on-one encounter with falcons and owls.
· Foodie treat: Head to the Woolpack in Eskdale for a casual but absolutely delicious meal. Their slow-cooked beef is a standout, as is the local cider (reward yourself after a hike!)
· Best activity: For a classic adventure, tackle part of Wainwright’s famous Coast to Coast trail. Start early to catch the sunrise over the Cumbrian coast, and take your time as you walk through remote villages and valleys that feel frozen in time.
· Secret Kip tip: Wild swim at Blea Tarn: skip the crowds at Windermere and make your way to Blea Tarn. Tucked away in Great Langdale, this quiet pool is perfect for an early morning swim, with views of the Langdale Pikes rising dramatically in the background.
