The very best places to stay in

Northumberland & North East

The North East is a region that’s not always on people’s radar, but captivates all who visit. From windswept beaches to wild moors, colourful coastal villages to the the gritty cosmopolitan heart of Newcastle and peaceful charms of Durham, it offers a blend of history, nature, culture and unmistakable energy.

Northumberland is home to some of the most remote and spectacular landscapes in the UK, perfect for those looking to truly get away from it all. Stay in the national park and you’ll see more stars than people; this is a Dark Skies area, and night skies are incredible. It’s also has a beautifully rugged coastline (hire canoes from Whitley Bay to explore), and a rich history. Alnwick Castle, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, battlefields, Bamburgh castle, Hadrian’s Wall… they’re all here.

Hadrian’s Wall also snakes through the North Pennines; 73 miles long there’s a lot of it to go around. Whilst here, we’d also recommend seeing the wonderfully named Cauldron Snout waterfall, and cycling a section of the C&C. And if you’ve always dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights, come in Oct/Nov or April to coincide with the equinox, and keep your fingers crossed; the aurora often dance here.

My Kip favourites

Architecture.

This is castle country. Our favourites are Alnwick (a must for Harry Potter fans), and Bamburgh (perched above golden sands and perfectly preserved).

My Kip favourites

Must do.

Walk over the causeway at low tide to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, home to a historic monastery, wildlife, and stunning beaches.

My Kip favourites

With kids.

Step back in time at UNESCO-listed Hadrian’s Wall; once the Roman Empire’s northern frontier. 73 miles long, the stones are interspersed by old forts and living museums, with plenty of trail maps and quizzes en route to keep kids engaged.

My Kip favourites

Best activity.

A boat trip around the Farne Islands, where you can spot puffins, grey seals and migratory seabirds (shags, kittiwakes, razorbills, and guillemots). Puffin season is May-July.

My Kip favourites

Kip tip.

Visit the wonderfully named Cauldron Snout waterfall, the lesser-known neighbour to High Force.

My Kip favourites

Foodie treat.

Craster kippers. These smoked fish are produced in the pretty seaside villages of Craster and Seahouses.
