The very best places to stay in Somerset

Forget all those local yokel jokes; Somerset’s getting cooler every year. Glastonbury, of course, kicked it all off, but nowadays market towns Bruton and Frome are insanely creative hubs, too; home to brilliant independents, a Hauser & Wirth gallery and a bougie crowd. The foodie scene has exploded too, drawing upon the fabulous local produce from all those farrrms. The opening of the iconic Newt hotel and gardens was the very best endorsement of it all.
Whilst handily close to Bristol, Somerset’s unashamedly rural, with miles of countryside, winding lanes topped by tree tunnels, pretty villages and a lovely, slower pace. Come for the gentle Mendip hills, incredible starling murmurations over the Levels, magical Stourhead and Cheddar Gorge, and, of course, some world-class cider. You can even visit the infamous Glasto Cider Bus from our Craftsman’s Cabin!

Kip tips:
· Architecture: Bath’s entire city centre is a Unesco site, crafted from iconic honey-hued Bath stone. The Royal Crescent and The Circus are incredible examples of Georgian urban design (often used on film sets) but the Roman Baths are the piece de resistance; a 2,000 year old Roman legacy, incredibly preserved.
· Must-visit: the Quantock Hills. One of the UK’s first-classed Ares of Natural Beauty, the Quantock hills are a walkers’ paradise with miles of heather-cloaked heathland and twisty ancient forest tumbling down to the Bristol Channel. Wild ponies are everywhere and views stretch forever.
· With kids: Cycle the Strawberry Lane. This 10-mile traffic-free route offers a safe, scenic way to explore the countryside and zip through lovely villages.
· Foodie treat: Osip, in Bruton. A 300-year old country inn, turned farm-to-fork restaurant. Menus evolve daily, driven by seasonal produce, but expect the likes of parsnip with black garlic and togarashi, and pekin duck with blackcurrant.
· Best activity: everyone visits Glastonbury Tor, but most do it at midday when it’s swarming with people. To truly experience its magic, hike to the top for sunrise. The view is breathtaking with morning mist rising off the Somerset Levels.
· Secret Kip tip: Hinton St George is like a living postcard with its idyllic stone cottages and village green.
